Andiswa Bhungane
Andiswa Bhungane is a Johannesburg-based mixed media artist whose work is a vibrant celebration of life's euphoric pleasures. Despite holding a Bachelor of Commerce from the Univ. of KwaZulu-Natal, her creative path was inevitable. Born in KwaZulu-Natal to a family of creatives—her mother a dressmaker and pastry chef, and her sister an event planner and restaurateur—Andiswa's love for art was nurtured from a young age, allowing her to hone the distinctive skills she employs today.
In her practice, Andiswa masterfully combines luxurious and tactile materials, including resin, plaster, oil paint, acrylic, and various forms of gold. She launched her art career just two years ago, making an immediate impact with two collections: “Tempt the fates once more” and “Darling, might we dance?” Inspired by the liberating feeling of dance, these works capture moments of simple, profound joy. This theme of movement and celebration continued into her latest collection, “Invitation to the dance,” which features dynamic 3D sculpted pieces on canvas, beaming with rich colour and texture.
Guided by her personal motto, "Find art in the everyday," Andiswa's work translates the energy of social connection and personal delight into tangible, opulent forms. Her art is an invitation to embrace the sentiment expressed by Agnes De Mille: “To dance is to be out of yourself, larger, more beautiful, more powerful…this is power. It is glory on Earth and it is yours for thetaking.”
