Mbali Nqobile Mdikane
Mbali Nqobile Mdikane (b. 2001) is a visual artist based in Johannesburg. Hailing from Mthatha/East London in the Eastern Cape, Mdikane has been actively involved in the art world since a young age. Her works concentrate on the development of fantastical characters that seemingly transcend human anatomy. These characters serve the purpose of presenting solutions to human problems and highlight the simplicity of life, diverging from its complexities. embracing afrofuturism/africanism, Mdikane intriguingly explores how black individuals can be perceived. By challenging the conventional depictions of the black body through the use of organic shapes and unconventional approaches to color, materiality, and form, Mdikane aims to shift the narrative surrounding black people and ensure their representation in the forefront of ideas.
