Wandie Mesatywa
Mesatywa's artwork is influenced by tragic life experiences: that of child sexual abuse, the passing of her mother and loss of family. The medium of photography has enabled her with the courage to confront and express that which is universal, but at the same time examine personal experience- subject matter that is taboo, particularly in her community. Mesatywa's artwork explores the everydayness of things and their seemingly innocent associations as well as breaking through the stereotypical notions. Although subtle, Mesatywa's artwork acknowledges that which cannot be changed. Mesatywa hopes to achieve closure, healing as well as gain self-empowerment through authenticity, validate her existence to herself and something to give new meaning and value in her life.
