Nothando Chiwanga
Nothando Chiwanga, born on May 6, 1997, in Harare, Zimbabwe, is a multidisciplinary artist known for her work in performance art, photography, and collage. She attended the National Gallery of Zimbabwe's School of Visual Arts and Design, from which she graduated in 2019. Chiwanga's work is deeply influenced by her personal experiences and reflections on womanhood, tradition, and change.
She uses her body as a medium to explore themes of education, food, bereavement, and domestic life, highlighting the complexities of young womanhood in a society where traditional values are evolving. Her art incorporates an expressionist and performative style, with vivid use of light, pose, and environment in her portraiture, giving her work a distinct sense of realism.
Chiwanga has exhibited in several prominent group shows, including New Signatures and Green Shoots exhibitions, the Notes for Tomorrow traveling exhibition, and Young Contemporary 2022 at the National Museum in Lagos. Her international experience extends to the Madzimbawe Group Show at Akka Project in Dubai. She has completed artist residencies at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe in 2020 and Releartsfoundation in Lagos in 2022. In addition to her exhibitions and residencies, Chiwanga has participated in various workshops, including realism with John Kotze, performance art with Sithembile Msezane, and art ethics with Julius Mushambadope.
Her work documents the changing perceptions of women and positions womanhood as a political subject, examining its transformation within the context of modern society.
