Colbert Mashile
Colbert Mashile (b. 1972, Bushbuckridge, Mpumalanga) draws deeply from his cultural heritage and personal experiences. Influenced by powerful customs and rituals such as circumcision, Mashile turned to art for refuge and healing. His work often delves into complex narratives surrounding cultural norms, home, power, language, the natural landscape, and human-animal connections
Raised in a family of teacher, Mashile was expected to follow a similar path. However, his curiosity about art during his studies in Tshwane led him to the Johannesburg Art Foundation and ultimately to a Fine Arts degree from the University of the Witwatersrand. His unique ability to tap into universal psychological archetypes, intertwined with his African identity, has brought him national and international recognition.
Mashile's work is characterized by mystical figures, phallic images, pods, everyday objects, and organic shapes, reflecting his connection to the earth. His use of colours and form conveys a profound understanding of the land and its people. Through his symbols and icons, Mashile communicates the truths of South African society with remarkable clarity and insight.
