Andrew Kayser
Andrew Kayser (b. 1975) is a psycho-geographical painter whose works explore the complexities and contradictions of suburban life, a middle-class ideal fraught with struggles to maintain comfort. Utilizing oil paint, Kayser;s art reflects a collision of inner and outer realities, inviting various interpretations without imposing a singular viewpoint. His paintings delve into themes of doubt, ambiguity, and contradiction, capturing a poignant, melancholic, and beautiful essence.
Born in East London, South Africa, Kayser graduated from the Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten (Royal Academy of Art) in Den Haag, Netherlands, in 2001. After several exhibitions in the Netherlands, he returned to South Africa in 2005. Following a battle with alcoholism, he resumed his professional art practice in 2014. His solo exhibitions include 'At Home After Dark' (2017) and 'Fragments of Longer Stories' (2023) at Graham Contemporary, Johannesburg. His work has been showcased at numerous international art fairs and is collected both nationally and internationally. Kayser lives and works in Johannesburg, South Africa.
