Oupa Sibeko

Oupa Sibeko (b. 1992, South Africa) is an interdisciplinary artist whose work spans theatrical, gallery, scholarly, and other public contexts, addressing the matter and politics of the body as a contested site. He graduated from the University of the Witwatersrand with a Bachelor of Arts in Performance and Visual Arts in 2015 and earned a Master of Fine Arts from the same institution in 2021.
Sibeko's work facilitates affective and relational encounters through ritualistic performance and play, critically engaging with the representation of the body, particularly the black male body. He explores themes such as black pain, spectacle, and negation, as well as the ethical implications of re-imagining and re-enacting pain. Drawing from African indigenous knowledge, Sibeko integrates elements of ritual, communal performances, theatre in the round, site-specific performances, and the exchange of cultural knowledge in his artistic practice.
