Ngozi Lebogang Chukura
Ngozi Lebogang Chukura is a multidisciplinary Nigerian/Motswana artist based in Botswana. She holds a BAFA from the Michaelis School of Fine Art and has participated in several group shows, including Surprize Surprize, the Joburg Fringe and the FNB Art Joburg fair. Her solo exhibition, 'The Shadow Journals' was held at the Alliance Francais in Gaborone in 2012. Chukura is an ardent feminist, and her poetry, short stories and op-eds have been published in Botswana Women Write, New African Woman Magazine, Galdem.com and the Stanford Journal of African Studies. “I have been interested in the intersection between femme identities, nature and spirituality. I am also an avid consumer of contemporary popular media and culture.” The result has been a series of hybrid, pop-femme-flora subjects on paper and canvas, that document her exploration of contemporary feminisms and evidence her process of ‘writing’ contemporary mythologies. Her fascination with nature-based religions and indigenous spiritualities has also allowed her explore the idea of contemporary myth-making that centers femme figures and imbues them with power. Her newer work does this quite literally by playing with scale and multiple mediums including thread and beads. “With my work, I am investigating symbols and energies that come from ‘Where the Stories Live’, a nameless, ageless place that speaks directly to our imaginations when we hear, look, create meaning. We are in an ephemeral continuum. What is ancient and sacred was once contemporary and secular.”
