Friederike von Stackelberg
Friederike von Stackelberg is a photographer and multimedia artist currently based in Johannesburg, South Africa. Having pursued her passion for photography after studying in Berlin, she transitioned into photojournalism, contributing to the German Press Agency (dpa) where she captured significant moments in history such as the end of the Cold War, the aftermath of the Armenian earthquake, and the fall of the Berlin Wall.
Her journey has taken her across continents, residing and working in Japan, Taiwan, India, Kenya, and Ethiopia. Immersed in diverse cultures, Friederike finds inspiration in the richness of human experiences and shares her insights through her art.
Friederike's photographs have found their way into various publications, reflecting her dedication to capturing the essence of places and cultures. In Johannesburg, she has also contributed her expertise as an art consultant for the Alternative Print Workshop.
Committed to environmental conservation, Friederike serves as an ambassador for Rhino Disharmony, an organization leveraging art for wildlife preservation.
Drawing from analogue techniques reminiscent of early photography, Friederike predominantly employs the collodion wet plate process in her work. This meticulous method, dating back to 1851, imbues her images with a timeless quality, inviting viewers to contemplate their deeper meanings. Through this process, she aims to evoke a sense of spirituality, leaving space for personal interpretation akin to poetry.
