Mpumi Peter
Mpumi Peter was born and raised in Springs, Ekurhuleni, Johannesburg. She graduated from the University of South Africa with a Bachelor's Degree in Financial Management and holds a Professional Diploma in Graphic Design and Digital Marketing. As a self-taught emerging artist, Mpumi's love and passion for art knows no bounds. Her creative journey has been shaped by her diverse educational background and her dedication to exploring various artistic mediums and techniques.
Mpumi does not limit herself to one medium, style, or concept, as inspiration and ideas continually evolve. Her creativity is expressed in various forms, with a preference for oil paintings due to their flexibility and versatility, allowing for both thin layers and thick impasto. Recently, she has begun experimenting with 3D formats and digital artwork, embracing the current digital art movement.
Influenced by her continent, surroundings, and the way Africans have embraced their blackness, Mpumi incorporates African fabrics and patterns into her artwork. Each piece she creates is a celebration of her African heritage, embracing her culture and acknowledging her worth. Her paintings are influenced by life and the quest for contentment in an age of discontentment. She aims to invoke happiness, calmness, and joy in her work, reminding viewers to celebrate their current circumstances and be patient for what is to come.
Mpumi's work has been showcased at the Pretoria Art Museum as part of the Sasol New Signature Art Competition 2021 Exhibition. She has also participated in group exhibitions at Thomarts Gallery (The Marc) in 2019 and 2020. Her pieces reflect her journey and the resilience of the individuals in her community.
