Bianca Batlle Nguema
The talented Spanish-Guinean artist is Catalan-born (1980) and based in Barcelona. Bianca Batlle Nguema is a prolific painter and mixed media artist with a gift for capturing the human form and its expression in her portraits and figurative paintings. The artist's work is closely informed by her Black and African maternal roots and cultural identity.
`The first woman I have reference to is my great-grandmother, Emilia. She was a seamstress in Equatorial Guinea, a very modern woman, she sewed the clothes of the Spanish colonizers. Her daughter (my grandmother Marina) was a very good student and she sent her to study in Barcelona, Spain, where she studied teaching. But since she was a woman, she had to go back to town to get married.
She had seven children in total, but she did not leave her vocation behind and she became a relevant character in both Guinea and Barcelona, even traveling to the United States, to New York, to teach.  Following her instincts, she opened the doors for her three daughters to be educated and independent women.
My grandmother had a very strong character and was unafraid. I am shaped and inspired by her, still.Â
My mother, Marina, who was really like an older sister, who at the age of 12 years old was the first to set foot on Spanish soil, and she never returned to her homeland on the African continent. She studied and worked in Barcelona, and Andorra.When she was 25 years old I arrived in the world and from her womb. She fought many hidden things troubling her within for a long, long time in solitude and silence - all her life in fact. For reasons still only known to her and which have left this world with her, she never wanted to talk to me about her past.
