“My first reaction when I saw the Mona Lisa for the first time was that she is rather dull and small”, says Smit, who explains how he applied himself with Da Vinci like acuity to the process of painting layer upon layer to a canvas to create a translucent light. As if the subject, our Modern Mona, is lit from behind.
