Freedom Trail: A Race and Artistic Journey Across South Africa
Gallery 2 presents The Freedom Trail, a visual narrative showcasing the iconic Race Across South Africa.
The Freedom Trail itself is a 2,150km odyssey on gravel roads, jeep tracks, and cattle paths, traversing South Africa from Pietermaritzburg to Wellington. It winds through many of the country's major mountain ranges. For two decades, mountain bikers have tackled this challenge, initially conceived by Dave Waddilove. Each year, during harsh winter conditions, the Race Across South Africa pushes competitors to their limits. Those who conquer the race within the 26-day cutoff earn a prized Basuto blanket.
The race is grueling, demanding immense physical and mental fortitude. However, the rewards are unparalleled. It offers a unique glimpse into the breathtaking landscapes and welcoming communities of South Africa, an experience reserved for a select few. Participants forge a deep connection with the trail, forming a resilient Freedom Trail community that cherishes the event and the spirit of camaraderie it fosters.
With this spirit in mind, Gallery 2 invited artist Bruce Backhouse to join a residency program along the trail. Accepting the invitation, Bruce became the official “Freedom Artist”. His resulting series of paintings not only capture the endless vistas and diverse terrain of the journey but also evoke a sense of familiarity: “I have been there” or “It looks like a place I have seen before”.
For many years, the Freedom Trail community has supported the Freedom Trail Scholarship Fund, funding secondary education for local students. A significant portion of the proceeds from Bruce's artwork sales will go towards this important cause.
The exhibition runs from March 2nd to April 6th, 2024.
