Abdias Ngateu

Abdias Ngateu

Born in Douala, Cameroon in 1990, Abdias Ngateu is a painter known for his humorous social commentary on his home country.

Drawing inspiration from storytellers throughout history, Abdias Ngateu uses humour and animal characters in his paintings to address the realities of life in Cameroon. His vibrant works playfully depict the challenges faced by ordinary people navigating the country's often chaotic transportation system. These seemingly light hearted scenes offer a deeper social commentary, highlighting issues like corruption, infrastructure deficiencies, and the daily struggles of citizens.

Ngateu's artistic journey began at the age of 14 with studies in graphic and decorative arts. He furthered his education with a degree in sociology at the University of Douala, a discipline that undoubtedly informs his keen social observations. The artist's meticulous attention to detail extends beyond the comical animal figures. Details like witty slogans emblazoned on vehicles ("Free Wifi on Board," "Air-conditioned Taxi") and the expressions on the animals' faces add layers of meaning, prompting viewers to look beyond the humor and confront the underlying realities.

Ngateu's talent has garnered recognition both within Cameroon and internationally. He has received awards such as the Goethe Institute's "Discovery" Award (2015) and the "Young Hopes 2017" National Contest third prize. His work has been exhibited at prestigious events like the DAK'ART Biennale of Contemporary African Art and garnered respectable bids at ArtCurial auctions. Represented by the Out of Africa Gallery since 2018, Abdias Ngateu's career continues to flourish with his message resonating with audiences worldwide.

And let's hope you keep in mind the motto written on one of his famous taxis: "YOU SLEEP, YOUR LIFE SLEEPS!”
