Mncedi Madolo

Mncedi Madolo

Mncedi Madolo is a Johannesburg-based artist who holds a National Diploma in Fine Arts (majoring in paintings) from the Walter Sisulu University, obtained in 2014. He relocated to Johannesburg in 2017 to establish himself as a full-time artist, a move that immersed him in the complex realities of urban life.

Observing the daily lives of people navigating a lower middle-class existence alongside the pervasive influence of advertising media selling aspirational dreams, Madolo found rich territory for artistic exploration. His work directly engages with these paradoxes. He incorporates found materials collected from the city streets—such as magazine covers proclaiming "black is beautiful" and flyers offering quick solutions to personal problems—into his pieces.

Leveraging his skills as a skillful illustrator and freelance cartoonist for major national newspapers, Madolo often integrates cartoon sketches that critique or mock the status quo, sometimes featuring familiar brand logos in the background. Through this complex layering of found imagery, painted elements, and illustrative commentary, his work offers a nuanced perspective on contemporary Johannesburg society.
