Akilah Watts

Akilah Watts

Akilah Watts (b. 1996) is a Barbadian artist whose multidisciplinary work explores identity, cultural heritage, and the nuanced realities of her island home. After receiving her BFA in 2017, she quickly gained international exposure, participating in the Prizm Art Fair in Miami that same year. Watts has since built a significant exhibition record both locally in Barbados and internationally in cities like New York and San Francisco, including a notable exhibition at the World Trade Centre.

Her practice is deeply personal, with distinct bodies of work that delve into her relationship with natural hair and her Caribbean roots. In another prominent series, Moments From My Island Home, she thoughtfully navigates the space between the idyllic, postcard image of Barbados and the authentic, lived experience. Watts has been featured in numerous publications and online platforms such as Artsy, Artnet, and Art-LeadHER, marking her as a compelling voice in contemporary Caribbean art.
