Origin Art Presents: Tracks and Traces: Abstraction in Painting and Photography

Tracks and Traces transcends a mere juxtaposition of artistic approaches, forging a captivating dialogue through the power of collaboration and mark-making.

Individual Strengths, United Vision:
Sue Martin, a force in Johannesburg's art scene, and Matt Slater, a renowned Cape Town photographer, join forces to present this evocation exhibition. Their individual practices, grounded in abstraction and clarity, respectively, find synergy in a dynamic interplay between painting and photography.

Exploring Memory and Nature:
Slater, deeply connected to Cape Town's natural beauty, pushes the boundaries of photography, delving into the fleeting nature of memory. He utilizes a blend of analog and digital techniques to craft layered narratives that bridge the tangible and the ethereal.

The Magic of Collaboration:
It is in their collaborative pieces, "Beginnings" and "Elementals," that true magic unfolds. Slater's evocative photographs, capturing the haunting beauty of Cape Town's mountains, become the canvas. Martin then layers them with paint, her brushstrokes transforming the familiar into the abstract. The resulting works are simultaneously recognizable and enigmatic, inviting viewers on a journey of discovery through color, shape, and mark-making.

A Symphony of Visual Narratives:
Having collaborated before, Martin and Slater's reunion in this exhibition signifies a bold step in showcasing their unified vision. Bound by their reverence for mark-making, they push boundaries, challenge perceptions, and craft a symphony of visual narratives.

Tracks and Traces invites the audience on a journey through diverse landscapes - urban and natural, immediate and eternal. Martin and Slater's combined work encourages us to seek balance, embrace serenity, and celebrate the transformative power of collaborative artistic exploration.

Exhibition Dates: September 9th - October 11th, 2023
