Everard Read Cape Town| Well, There goes that dream

Everard Read Cape Town Presents: Well, There Goes that Dream by Warren Maroon

“There is no dream when in a state of survival.”

This exhibition by Cape Flats artist Warren Maroon explores the complex interplay of hope and despair in contemporary South Africa. Maroon contends that many South Africans, facing ongoing hardships, struggle to hold onto their dreams.

Drawing inspiration from Arte Povera, Maroon employs found objects to communicate his personal and collective experiences. He transforms everyday items into thought-provoking sculptures, employing a language that oscillates between reverence and contempt, reflecting the duality of existence amidst violence and vulnerability.

Maroon reflects the challenges of existing in a society that both shapes and fractures its citizens, stating, “Our political climate isn't improving. People of colour haven't seen a government work for them. The gap between rich and poor widens, and dreams of a better future seems increasingly distant. Rising costs, blackouts, and corruption chip away at hope.”

Exhibition Dates: July 22nd - August 18th, 2023

Witness the powerful narratives woven from found objects in Warren Maroon's captivating Well, There Goes that Dream.
