WORLDART gallery in Cape Town is proud to presents the latest solo exhibition by Dion Cupido, opening on Thursday, May 4th, 2023

Cupido, considered one of the most significant Black portrait artist of his generation, draws inspiration from his upbringing in the challenging environment of Cape Town’s Mitchells Plain. His artistic journey began with street art, and later evolved through community projects, developing a visual language influenced by hip pop culture and the realities of living amidst social struggles.

“State of Reality” delves into the subjective nature of our perceived worlds. The exhibition asks: What constitutes “reality” when one person's dangerous ghetto can be another’s safe haven? How do our individual experiences shape our understanding of the world, and can there be a universal reality?

Cupido’s urban scenes and portraits grapple these questions. He weaves together elements of fragility and intensity, inviting viewers to engage with the artwork based on their own unique perspectives and lived experiences.
