Statement by artist: "For me the goal was always to have complete control with the image-making process and being able to create images from the choice of film and type of camera to experimental shooting techniques and hand-development, which usually included non-standard push-processing and scanning. Film, to me, will remain the ultimate photographic medium and I’m proud to have been part of developing (!) and keeping the unique styles and experimentation within South African film photography alive with Cult Film.

My practice juxtaposes the ephemeral nature of life, ultimately meaningless and always marching forward, with the deep and tactile physicality of film and print to push everyday “nothingness” into something that breaks out and creates a new static present moment of memory. My upcoming book Proof of Memory perfectly explains what my images are to me, a proof of moments and sensations throughout the many lives I have lived and I will always have the ability to sit down and ground myself in my lived experiences by looking at my negatives, ultimately proving I was there.".
