Bontle Tau

Bontle Tau (b. 1995, South Africa) is a visual artist, writer and curator based between Bloemfontein and Johannesburg, South Africa. She obtained her BA Fine Arts degree in 2018, at the University of the Free State. She is currently completing her Masters in Fine Arts at UFS and works as a junior lecturer at the Central University of Technology. 

As a visual artist, Tau is a member of the Free State Art Collective and she has participated in group exhibitions at the Turbine Art Fair, the Women’s Day group exhibition Oliewenhuis art museum in South Africa, as well as a group show at Galerie L’App’Art in Périgeux, France. Being a polyglot, she finds her primary focus in issues concerning cultural identity, code-switching and assimilation. Her MA oeuvre addresses her newly acquired francophone identity and, a consequential quest for ‘une authenticité africaine’ (an African authenticity) in response to a new lingual identity. 

Her writing and research pursuits currently include a chapter contribution toward a volume titled From Autofiction to the Autofictional, published by Oxford University in 2021. Her work experience includes a curatorial internship at the Southern African Foundation For Contemporary Art in Saint-Émilion, France in 2020.
