Mbali Shabane, St. Nqobile (Conqueror) (2023)
This work explores the complex relationship between African spirituality and colonial religion, a struggle familiar to many Black Africans. It critiques the erasure of African spirituality in religious texts and practices.
The artwork reimagines a Catholic stained-glass window. A Black woman, adorned in a green skirt reminiscent of traditional virgin attire, stands on a woven mat (ucansi). She holds a white prayer candle, symbolizing both faiths and yearning for a more inclusive spirituality.
The vibrant tapestry of colourful candles references the diverse practices of Sangomas (traditional healers), where each colour holds a specific meaning and purpose. This abundance evokes a powerful prayer, one that honours the richness of African traditions.
