Wild Places And Other Feelings: Exploring Connections with Karin Daymond

‘Curiously, we occasionally feel like we already know a new place, or that it know us. An impassive landscape becomes the channel for our intuition. I wonder if this intimate relationship exists because our evolution is interwoven with being at attuned to the horizon, to the way clouds form as air collides with a mountainm with the angle of the sun as it catches the light-seeking cabbage tree in the deepest part of a valley. - Karin Daymond’

Daymond explores this connection through her recent works, returning to pastels after a 30-year hiatus. Drawn to their immediacy and grappling with their inherent fragility, she creates works that capture fleeting moments, reflecting the ever-shifting nature of light and landscape.

‘These limitations become my inspiration,’ she explains. ‘By whittling down the work to an instant, I aimed to capture a universal feeling - a reminder of both our significance and insignificance within the vastness of nature.’

This exhibition reflects on our changing relationships with wild places. With increasing access mediated through our windows and phone screens, the immediacy and rawness of untamed landscapes becomes ever more precious.

Daymond's works invite the viewers to reconnect with the earth, to experience the intimate dialogue between self and landscape, and to contemplate the intricate dance of belonging and impermanence that unfolds in nature's embrace.
