This portrait is part of a series of images I began to take of my grandmother, mother and younger sister. In late 2018, my grandmother had a stroke and was bedridden after being discharged. As the eldest of three siblings and the only daughter, my mother was tasked with taking care of my grandmother in our family home in Gaborone. Every day in December 2018, my mother and sister would wash and bathe my grandmother in the mornings, measure her blood pressure and blood sugar levels, and feed and clothe her. The subsequent years before her passing in December 2022, my mother was under immense financial and emotional stress to look after my grandmother. During this time, I reflected on the matriarchal household and environment I was raised in Botswana and the cyclical nature of the family dynamic. My mother had to take care of my grandmother as her mother did for her when she was a child; my teenage sister was observing this dynamic, and I questioned how this would shape her life and family in the future.
