Ronja Falkenbach
Ronja Falkenbach (b. 1989) is a Berlin-based German visual artist and photographer. She studied at the University of Applied Sciences in Bielefeld, Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem, and Chung-Ang University in Seoul, earning her B.A. in Photography and Media Arts in 2021. Falkenbach's art explores intimacy and themes at the intersection of documentary and performative photography.
Her empathetic relationships with her subjects allow her to capture deeply personal moments, blurring the lines between reality and fiction. This approach is evident in her use of social networks like Instagram, Tinder, and Couchsurfing, which she employs as research tools to delve into subcultures and connect body and place.
Her work is known for its blending of documentary photography's connection to reality with contemporary perspectives on portraiture. Falkenbach's projects often involve actions both in front of and behind the camera, intertwining her presence with her subjects, even if she never physically appears in the photographs. This method constructs a narrative that reflects her psychological and existential journey, challenging the traditional notions of truth in documentary photography.
Falkenbach's works have been featured in prominent publications such as ZEIT Campus Magazine and Musikexpress. She has been awarded a DAAD scholarship and has participated in several prestigious residency programs, including those led by Antoine d’Agata (Magnum) in Arles and the 1st Lausitz Photo Days in Lieberose. Her work has been nominated for the "August-Sander-Preis" and exhibited at notable venues like the Benaki Museum in Greece, CICA Museum in South Korea, and AFF Gallery in Berlin. She is also a member of the contemporary photography collectives AFF Galerie and Unbinding Histories Collective.
