Vanessa Cowling is a South African photographer and educator. She graduated from the Michaelis School of Fine Art at the University of Cape Town with a BA Honours in 1998. Following her studies, she spent a number of years living and working in New York, London, and Edinburgh before returning to South Africa to establish her career.
Cowling held her first solo exhibition, Strings and Flight, in 2005 as part of the Cape Town Month of Photography, and has since participated in numerous group shows. Her first book of travel photographs, West Coast Cederberg to sea, was published by Struik in 2006. Her second solo show, Shoreline, was held at the Barnard Gallery.
In addition to her artistic practice, Cowling is a respected educator who has lectured part-time at the Michaelis School of Fine Art (UCT) and the Cape Town School of Photography. She also works as a freelance photographer specializing in Fine Art, Art Reproduction, and Portrait Photography.
