Steve Maphoso (b. 1990, Viana, Luanda, Angola) is a self-taught artist currently based in Johannesburg, South Africa. Since completing his secondary education in 2010, he has developed his artistic practice and contributed to teaching and mentorship projects, including MC Art at the State Threatre in Pretoria. Working primarily and with renewed energy in charcoal on paper, Maphoso delves into social and personal issues, drawing inspiration from memories, experiences of loss and themes of love.
As a contemporary African artist, he aims to express his world and reflect the complexities of daily life. He views his art as a vital reminder of identity, a way to document even small triumphs, and foster pride through navigating both failures and accomplishments.
Maphoso has held solo exhibitions, including at Trent Gallery (2020), and participated in numerous group shows at significant venues such as the Pretoria Art Museum (2018), Turbine Art Fair (2022), Lizamore Gallery (2023), and auctions facilitated by Strauss & Co (2023). He was recognized as a finalist in the Culture Leader Arts Competition in 2019 and his work is represented in collections such as the MAD Leadership Foundation.
