QAQAMBILE Beading Collective
The Cape Town-based beading, art and crafts collective Qaqambile and run by women crafters, artists and maker are the masterminds informing premiere artworks that feature beading by leading artists from across South Africa.
For the exhibition 'Embodying Her, 2023' the women have for first time in their history as a collective the women feature artworks made by themselves and that brings to life their own life stories through beading.
The master-beaders of Cape Town partnered with iconic artist and visual activist Zanele Muholi to collborate on the production of several works in the series, and produced beautiful beaded-paintings of their own - works that powerfully convey their journey of economic striving towards independence as women.
