Fred Page

Fred (Frederick Hutchinson) Page (1908-1984) was an artist known for his unique personal imagery and accurate portrayals of Port Elizabeth's architectural features. Between 1947 and 1980, he resided in the Central area near the city's harbour, where his extraordinary visuals imagination flourished. A reclusive individual by choice, Page drew material from sketches and photographs for his artwork.
With minimal formal art education, he was largely self-taught and possessed a discerning taste in classical music. Unaffected by contemporary art trends, Page's world was surreal, populated by characters derived from his observations of street life and his background. His artwork is characterized by mordant wit, a sense of the absurd, and an overarching awareness of life's enigmatic tragedies.
