Luis M.S. Santos
Luis M. S. Santos is a contemporary Mozambican sculptor, who draws on his African social and cultural context to reflect the disharmony of human beings with nature and their dependence on the digital world. He is interested in the combined feelings of admiration and fear that raw nature creates in him and thinks of his works as inhabitants of remote, abandoned and vegetation-filled places. The artist also uses self-representation as a way to resolve his identity and existential conflicts, manifesting himself in different mediums such as drawing, sculpture and digital montage.
Born 1993, Santos graduated in sculpture in 2016 from the Faculdade de Belas Artes da Universidade do Porto, Portugal. Based in Mozambique, the artist teaches at the Faculty of Arts of the Instituto Superior de Artes e Cultura. He is a recipient of the third edition of the Paulo Cunha e Silva Award, the 2023 Prince Claus Seed Award and the 2023 Mozal Arts and Culture Award.
