Emma Alice Coppola (b. 2001) is a Johannesburg-based artist, currently residing in Linden. She is completing her Honours degree in Fine Art at the University of Johannesburg, having earned her BA in Visual Arts from the same institution in 2023, achieving recognition on the Dean's Merit List.
Coppola's passion for visual arts began at a young age, fostered under the guidance of South African artist Robyn Penn and solidified through her secondary school studies in Design and Visual Arts. While primarily identifying as a printmaker with a preference for intaglio techniques, particularly zinc etchings, her artistic practice also significantly incorporates sculpture and drawing. She is currently undertaking a work placement with esteemed South African printmaker Bevan De Wet at his Johannesburg studio, Eleven Editions.
Drawing inspiration from diverse figures such as artists Diane Victor, Mary Sibande, and Judith Mason, philosopher Julia Kristeva, and film director Peter Greenaway, Coppola's work is deeply rooted in lived experience and her observation of the world. She critically engages with social issues concerning the politics of the female body and explores philosophies surrounding abjection, autonomy, and feminist theories. Through her art, Coppola seeks to articulate aspects of self and identity, aiming to connect with others through expressions of shared experience.
