Phahlo Monroe Mtangai, (b. 1971) is a multidisciplinary artist who specializes in textile design and printing. He is drawn to the use of geometric shapes and repetition, using these elements to create dialogue around cultural identity and heritage that resonates with millennials. His work is heavily influenced by prehistoric world cultures and African religion and mythology, blending these influences to forge a unique identity within the global artistic landscape.
Rooted in the heritage of the amaMphondomise clan, Phahlo Mtangai's work is deeply connected to his cultural background. He embraced his calling as both an artist and a shaman, merging his spiritual practice with his artistic creations. Mtangai holds a qualification in sculpture from the University of Durban-Westville, and his signature works include totem sculptures crafted from railway sleepers—a material chosen for its historical and cultural significance.
With over 35 years of experience, Mtangai has worked across a wide range of mediums, including textile design, puppetry, performance, painting, printmaking, set design, and acting.
