Ngoma KaMphahlele
Ngoma KaMphahlele is a visual artist who uses photography to explore various themes, such as
fashion, jazz, and the architecture of Johannesburg, migration, and home (the sense of belonging). Ngoma's artistic journey has been deeply influenced by the diverse cultural landscapes of South Africa.
In 2018, KaMphahlele graduated from the Market Photo Workshop with an Advanced Certificate in the advanced photography program.
Inspired by the vibrant fashion scene and the timeless art form of jazz, Ngoma started capturing the essence of both through his lens. His visionary photography not only showcased the beauty and intricacies of fashion but also captured the soulful essence of the jazz appropriators in their gatherings. This unique combination of fashion and jazz became a prominent feature in Ngoma's work, offering a mesmerizing blend of visual aesthetics and musical narratives. In 2023, he developed and exhibited a body of work titled "JazzLand," which further solidified his reputation as a remarkable artist.
Furthermore, KaMphahlele has always been fascinated by the architecture of Johannesburg, a city that reflects the history, growth, and transformation of South Africa. By capturing the city's iconic buildings and structures, KaMphahlele aimed to shed light on the intersecting stories of urban development, cultural heritage, and personal experiences. Migration, home, and a sense of belonging are recurring themes in KaMphahlele’s body of work. Drawing on his own experiences and the stories of others, he examines the complex feelings and challenges faced by individuals who have left their familiar homes in search of new beginnings. Through his photography, KaMphahlele invites viewers to contemplate the notions of identity, roots, and the profound yearning for a place to call home.
Throughout the years, Ngoma KaMphahlele has participated in various exhibitions, showcasing his
exceptional talent and thought-provoking work. Additionally, KaMphahlele received the prestigious
Thami Mnyele Award in 2018, winning the Ekurhuleni prize.
Currently, KaMphahlele is part of artists under the banner of occupying the gallery under the guidance
and mentorship of esteemed artists Mary Sibande and Lawrence Lemaoana. This influential and nurturing artistic environment allows KaMphahlele to further refine his craft, experiment with new
techniques, and continue to push the boundaries of his artistic vision.
