Sarah Jayne Fell

Sarah Jayne Fell (b. 1986) is a Cape Town-based artist whose primary medium is painting. Her work delves into personal myths through expressionism and process art, celebrating the interplay of her two muses: colour and light. The subject matter is both personal and universal, reflecting the human condition and her personal experiences. Drawing on images and ideas from dreams and journaling, she engages in freestyle painting or digital collage, culminating in poetry.
Fell's artwork ultimately reflects a personal process that is both cathartic and autobiographical. Her artistic journey began in her mother's ceramic studio in rural KwaZulu-Natal, sparking a lifelong passion for art. She was awarded the matric art prize at Durban Girls' College in 2003 for practical art. She furthered her education in creative writing, media & communications, philosophy, and English literature, fulfilling her love for broader arts and culture. In 2008, she moved to Cape Town to become the editor of One Small Seed magazine, later specializing in digital media and communications, and running a content studio since 2014.
As a counterpoint to the digital world, Sarah has continuously produced art in various mediums, including painting, drawing, collage, mixed media, digital art, and ceramics. She has attended art classes, painting workshops, live figure drawing, and process art groups at Ruth Prowse, Bright Studio, and A Star. Sarah has participated in group exhibitions at the KZNSA, with ANON. Pop Up, and the Zeitz MOCAA (At Home, 2021). She now paints from her home art studio in Kommetjie, Cape Town.
