Jana Aspeling was born in 1979 in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Her creative journey has traversed multiple disciplines before settling into the world of fine arts.
Jana’s formal education in art began at the University of Stellenbosch, where she initially studied graphic design. However, finding the constraints of graphic design limiting, she shifted her focus to fine arts, a move that allowed her to explore a broader spectrum of creativity. During her studies, she specialised in printmaking and painting, disciplines that deeply resonated with her and honed her skills in colour and composition.
After university, Jana pursued a career outside the traditional art world, spending nearly two decades in the hairdressing industry. Here, she not only mastered the art of colour and form through her work as a master colourist and salon owner but also deepened her understanding of the human form and psyche. This experience enriched her artistic perspective, particularly in portraying the essence of femininity.
Jana’s art is characterised by its vibrant colour palettes and intricate textures, often exploring themes of beauty and the complexities of everyday life. Her work frequently features flora and fauna motifs , embedding subtle symbols and narratives that invite viewers to look beyond the surface. The interplay of natural elements and human emotion in her art creates a compelling dialogue between the viewer and the artwork.
In 2021, Jana returned full-time to her first passion—painting—following a transformative period during the lockdown. This shift marked a prolific phase in her career, during which she produced several acclaimed series, including "Birds and Blooms," which reflect both personal growth and artistic evolution. Her works have been exhibited both locally and internationally, resonating with audiences for their depth and authenticity.
Today, Jana continues to live and work in Johannesburg, drawing inspiration from her surroundings and personal experiences. She is dedicated to exploring new techniques and subjects, continually pushing the boundaries of her artistic expression.
