Kaelo Molefe
Kaelo Molefe (b. 1990) is an artist, independent researcher, and medical doctor based in Johannesburg. His multidisciplinary creative practice draws from his experience in clinical medicine and a deep interest in the socioeconomic histories of the Global South and historiographies of "otherness". Molefe's work explores how power structures, representation, and concepts of normality are influenced by historical processes that have produced and institutionalized 'difference'.
Through writing, mixed media, collage, and moving images, Molefe explores these socio-historical dynamics, offering a nuanced critique of how identities and powers are shaped by history. His artistic inquiry focuses on the intersection of health, politics, and the human condition, investigating the complexities of societal norms and the bureaucratization of marginalized identities.
Molefe has exhibited at prestigious platfroms such as FNB Art Joburg (2023) and Turbine Art Fair (2022) in Johannesburg. His first solo exhibition, Other Schematics (2023), was held at Kalashnikovv Gallery in Johannesburg. He has also participated in group exhibitions, including Keystone at Kalashnikovv Gallery (2024) and Fresh Voices at Guns & Rain Gallery (2023).
With his unique blend of medical knowledge and artistic inquiry, Kaelo Molefe continues to challenge conventional narratives and broaden the discourse on identity and representation in contemporary art.
