Artist Anna van der Ploeg

Anna van der Ploeg (b. 1992) is a contemporary South African artist whose multi-disciplinary practice encompasses painting, printmaking, sculpture, and video. She has held several solo exhibitions, shown in galleries locally and abroad, and participated in artist residencies in Japan, India, and France. Her work is held in private and public collections, including the South African National Art Bank. She is currently pursuing a Master of Fine Arts at the KASK Royal Conservatory of Art in Belgium.

Her artistic practice is built on a foundation of technical dexterity and intellectual curiosity. A pivotal influence is her hands-on experience as a beekeeper, which began after a dramatic encounter with a swarm of bees. This has become a central motif in her work, where the figure of the beekeeper serves as a recurring protagonist and the societal structure of the hive becomes a metaphor for human communities. This theme defines her distinctive palette of warm ochres and wood blue.

Van der Ploeg’s process is labour-intensive and deeply engaged with materiality. Her background as a printmaker led her to train in Mokuhanga (traditional Japanese woodblock printing), an experience that inspired her recent carved and painted woodblocks which merge the disciplines of print, painting, and sculpture. This focus on craft is paralleled by a sharp interest in language and literature; her titles often precede the artwork, acting as prompts for fictions in which she can probe at truth.

As a figurative artist, van der Ploeg seeks new metaphors to understand social assemblies and instigate dialogue. Her work offers nuanced reflections that hint at surrealism before charting their own singular path. She views the role of the contemporary South African artist as that of a cultural practitioner responsible for navigating the ruptures of our time, using art as a vital space to lay common ground and imagine things differently.
