Sibonelo Chiliza
Sibonelo Chiliza (b. 1979, Mtwalume, Port Sheptsone) is a renowned botanical artist known for his exceptional focus and artistic skill. His early artistic endeavors included making intricate wire cars and clay sculptures. Chiliza studied Textile Design and Technology at Durban University of Technology, where his talent was recognized by artist and mentor Jean Powell. In 2004, he interned at the Durban Botanical Garden and later at the National Herbarium under botanical artist Gillian Condy. His work with the African Plants Initiative included managing the SANBI Pretoria art collection.
Chiliza's botanical art captures the freshness and colour of plants, ofen using Lyra pencils. His meticulous approach involves drawing from live plants to scale. He has contributed illustration to several books and participated in numerous exhibitions, including the SANBI Kirstenbosch Biennales, where he has won multiple awards. Chiliza's serene presence and dedication to his craft make his work both inspiring and technically precise.
