Nabir Yo
Nabir Yo was born in 2002 in Mpigi, Uganda. Raised by her grandmother, a skilled knitter and embroiderer, Nabir was introduced to the world of textiles and crafts from a young age. Imitating her grandmother’s techniques and experimenting with stitching dolls, Nabir’s passion for fashion design and art began to flourish. Her early fascination with transforming used fabrics, rugs, and offcuts into aesthetic creations laid the foundation for her artistic journey.
After completing high school, Nabir Yo embraced her calling as an artist with confidence. Her practice is marked by remarkable versatility that spans performance, fashion, installation, and painting. Her work often features large wall hangings and other installation pieces, blending these various art forms into a cohesive exploration of cultural and personal expression.
In Nabir Yo’s creative universe, art and fashion are intricately intertwined. She seeks to break away from traditional Western painting styles and draws inspiration from ancient Ugandan artists who used locally available materials. Through her use of collage and quilting techniques, she combines these materials with minimal brushstrokes to create comical and vibrant figures.
Nabir Yo’s work challenges conventional perceptions of young female Ugandan artists in a predominantly male-dominated and often volatile creative industry. By exploring bold female images and innovative fashion concepts, she celebrates cultural diversity and inclusivity. Her art serves as a statement of empowerment and offers a fresh perspective on the role of women in the contemporary art scene.
