Alejandra Arevalo
Alejandra Arévalo Martinez (Bogotá, Colombia) is a visual storyteller and photographer, currently based in Dortmund, Germany. She holds a BA in Visual Communication from Bauhaus Universität-Weimar and is pursuing an MA in Photographic Studies at Fachhochschule Dortmund. Alejandra's work is deeply focused on themes of territory, gender, and identity, using photography to convey stories that resonate with contemporary society.
In her artistic practice, Alejandra explores the intersections between photography, memory, and identity. Her work exists in the tension between personal experiences and collective memory, often through the lens of photographic archives, material traces, and everyday objects. Alejandra uses photography as a tool to penetrate and make visible both inner and outer worlds, questioning how visual narratives are constructed and their influence on our understanding of identity.
She approaches photographic techniques playfully and experimentally, combining analog and digital methods to create new layers of meaning. Her work is strongly rooted in research and engagement with theoretical approaches from history, philosophy, and art history, flowing into projects that often have a dialogical character. Alejandra also engages with the concept of participatory art, creating spaces where viewers are actively involved in interpreting and transforming stories.
One notable project is her photobook "A Cloud Above Me," which focuses on paternal absence in Latin America. Supported by the Bauhaus University Women’s Development Fund and the Stibet Scholarship for International Students, the book has been nominated for several prestigious awards, including the German Photo Book Award (2021), Encontros da Imagem (2021, Portugal), and Photolux Festival (2022, Italy).
Alejandra's projects have been shortlisted for Encontros da Imagem (Portugal), Belfast Foto Festival (Ireland), and BarTur Fotos (Great Britain). Her work has received support from DAAD, the Women’s Fund at Bauhaus University, and the Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung. She has been recognized with awards such as Talents 36 by C/O Berlin, the Young Art Prize La Rioja 2020, and the Kunstpreis Fotografie Berlin Brandenburg Lotto 2016.
