Sphephelo Mnguni

Sphephelo Mnguni
Sphephelo Mnguni is a Durban-based artist whose multimedia practice seeks to document back culture in all its permutations. Currently focused on painting, Mnguni creates portraits of black subjects which boldly address the viewer and call for recognition beyond cultural stereotypes. His work is inspired by inequalities observed and experienced in his daily life, and by discourses of blackness in South Africa and in the African diaspora. Mnguni completed a BA Fine Arts at the Durban University of Technology in 2016, and has participated in exhibitions both in South Africa and abroad. Most recently his work has been shown at the Ross Sutton Gallery in New York, on the exhibition "Black Voices: Friend of My Mind" (2020-2021), he also exhibited at BKhz Gallery (Gather ye Rosebuds while ye may: 2021 exhibition) and PRIZM Art Fair (2020, online edition).
