Hanien Conradie
Hanien Conradie is a South African earth artist who merges painting, ritualistic performance, and natural pigments to explore human-nature relationships and the theme of belonging. With a Master of Fine Art from the Michaelis School of Fine Art at the University of Cape Town, her practice is influenced by ecological thinkers like Arne Naess and Joanna Macy, and artists such as Richard Long, Mark Rothko, Agnes Martin, and Marina Abramovic.
Conradie draws inspiration from locations like Table Mountain National Park, the Tankwa Karoo, and Botswana’s sacred sites. Her projects range from landscape paintings using natural pigments to meditative ink studies and installations with organic materials, all reflecting her evolving relationship with these environments. Her work aims to address humanity’s alienation from nature and express her deepening connection with the natural world.
Widely exhibited across Southern Africa, Europe, and the USA, Conradie’s notable solo exhibitions include Ntlhantle: In the Direction of Beauty (Linnaeus Gallery, Gaborone 2018), Raaswater (Everard Read Gallery, Cape Town 2019), and Spoorloos (Everard Read Gallery, Cape Town 2021). She has also participated in ecological group shows like Earth Power! (2022) in Brussels and the 1-54 London Contemporary African Art Fair.
An active voice in ecological discourse, Conradie engages in interdisciplinary symposiums and artist residencies centered on environmental themes. Through her art, she invites others to reflect on their relationship with nature.
