Troye Shannon Alexander (b. 1990) is a Johannesburg-based South African photographer whose work delves into the complexities of identity, masculinity, and sexuality. Working primarily with various forms of film photography, Shannon is drawn to the medium's expansive techniques, using them as a powerful tool to deconstruct and reform his personal narrative.
Having been raised in a radicalised conservative community, Shannon's art serves as a direct response to the traditional norms that shaped his formative years. His photography is a deeply personal process of challenging ingrained beliefs, confronting past trauma, and coming to terms with his own identity.
Shannon was a participant in the 2022 Through The Lens Collective mentorship program under the guidance of Michelle Loukidis. His work has gained recognition through features in online publications such as Bubblegum Club and Weirdson. Notably, he has exhibited in group shows with the Through The Lens Collective and was featured in the prestigious Shutterland exhibition by the FirstRand group, where his work was shown alongside acclaimed artists Roger Ballen, Justice Mukheli, and Pierre Crocquet
