Lila Kibel
Lila Kibel is an artist deeply interested in materiality and the concept of entanglement, driven by concerns about extinction and the vulnerability of our planet. Her work explores the Anthropocene, the geological epoch where humans significantly impact the planet's habitability, caught between “entanglement of needs and consumerism’’(Tsing, 2017: 2). Kibel uses both natural and man-made debris collected from coastal walks to create and generate meaning.
The fluidity in her process encourages curiosity and experimentation, allowing her to work intuitively and empathically. While the layers of intertwined materials in her work may appear chaotic, reflecting internal turmoil, there is also joy and soothing rhythm in the act of making. Kibel believes these chaotic layers symbolize her emotional response to the detrimental impact on our ecosystem.
