Justice Mathonsi

Justice Mathonsi

Justice Mathonsi (b. 1987, Soweto), raised in Ribugwani, Limpopo from 1990, is a Johannesburg-based South African artist and printmaker. After completing high school and briefly studying Architecture at Intec College in 2011, he found his calling in printmaking, enrolling at the prestigious Artist Proof Studio in 2012. There, he specialized in the intricate technique of lino reduction.

Currently working as a full-time artist, Mathonsi focuses on creating compelling, large-scale portraits, primarily of the significant women within his life and community. His detailed works serve to emphasize their importance and acknowledge their often-overlooked roles in society, particularly in raising children. The lines and textures in his portraits capture elements of time, age, history, and accumulated knowledge. Through his distinct mark-making and the incorporation of patterns referencing his Tsonga roots, Mathonsi elevates these humble women, creating a powerful visual record of his family tree and heritage while prompting viewers to recognize their profound contributions.
