Catriona Towriss
Catriona Towriss is a self-taught artist who creates sculpture, relief, and land art from tree bark, seed pods, and other foraged materials. Born in the United Kingdom, Towriss explores her relationship with the land in South Africa, where she currently practices. Her work delves into what lies beyond the principles of time and resource extraction that govern our present reality, aiming to repair and regenerate reverence for the land.
After eleven years in public health research, Towriss transitioned to full-time artistic practice in 2020. In 2022, she held her first solo exhibition at Alliance Française in Cape Town, and in 2023, she was shortlisted for Strauss & Co’s Cassirer Welz Award. Towriss has participated in artist residencies across South Africa, including Tankwa Artscape (2024) and Bodhi Khaya residency (2023).
