Yusuf Durodola
Born in 1979 in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria, Durodola Yusuf is a well-known Nigerian professional painter and performance artist, who is popular for experimenting with recycled waste material. He has an NCE from the Federal College of Education, Akoka and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Fine Arts from the University of Lagos, Nigeria. Durodola aims to address socio-cultural issues with his work, including the human experience, social justice, culture and belief, as well as environmental pollution; he often engages the public in his thought-provoking performance art. He is quite vocal about saving the environment and group action to make the world a better place. In his performance ‘Global Hues’, Durodola says, ” We are the change the world is earnestly awaiting”. This performance happened at his alma matter, Federal College of Education for its 50th Anniversary celebration, which addressed the influence of education on drawing out people’s potentials In a bid to maintain sincerity and originality in his subjects, most of his performances draw from traditional Yoruba idioms, adages or proverbs and as such, are given Yoruba themes. He also aims to project his cultural identity onto his paintings and experimental work which entails some pattern formation in addition to waste material use.
