Ilya Rabinovich (b. 1965 in Kisheniev Moldova, U.S.S.R) is a distinguished typological photographer. Immigrating to Israel with his family in 1973, he earned his BFA in photography from the Bezalel Art and Design Academy in Jerusalem in 1994. From 1998 to 1999, Rabinovich was a participant in the prestigious Rijksakademie in Amsterdam and has resided there since. His work focuses on contextual and photographic research of ethnography and history museums, especially through his Museutopia project.
The first part of Museutopia was shot in Moldova, with the current focus on Israeli ethnography museums. His detached documentary style scrutinizes how historical narratives influence contemporary identities, exploring the formation of individual and collective memories, and the strategies employed by institutions to confront and reinterpret their contentious pasts to project a revered national identity.
Rabinovich's works have been exhibited internationally in museums, galleries, and art centers. He also undertakes commissioned photography projects, specializing in documenting the art world.
