Alexa Pienaar

Alexa Pienaar is a Johannesburg-based artist whose work is an interrogation of identity, land, and belonging in contemporary South Africa. Holding a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Johannesburg, Pienaar draws on her personal history—growing up on a small farm in the Western Cape—to inform her practice.

She works predominantly with leather, a medium deeply familiar to her through her father, a skilled leather craftsman. This material becomes a second skin in her art, used to explore her relationship with the physical land and its role in her psychological development as a white, Afrikaans-speaking woman. Pienaar uses elements of the South African landscape as potent visual metaphors for her lived experiences, creating sculptures that question and search for a sense of place.

An acclaimed emerging voice, Pienaar was the recipient of the Thami Mnyele Sculpture Merit Award in 2018 and has showcased her work in numerous prestigious exhibitions, including the Sasol New Signatures Awards and the Turbine Art Fair.
