Alexis Preller

Alexis Preller

Born in Pretoria, Alexis Preller was a pioneering South African artist who forged a unique and independent artistic path. He began his formal training at the Westminster School of Art in London, but his distinct style was primarily shaped by his extensive travels and voracious reading. Preller immersed himself in a wide array of artistic traditions, drawing inspiration from Egyptian, ancient Greek, Etruscan, early Renaissance, and particularly, the rich cultural heritage of southern and central Africa.

Rejecting both traditional European conventions and mainstream Modernism, Preller was dedicated to creating an art form that was deeply rooted in his own time and place. In the late 1940s and early 1950s, he frequently visited Ndebele settlements near Pretoria. These visits had a profound impact on his work, which began to feature the striking imagery of ‘Mapogga’ (Ndebele) women in their distinctive traditional attire and the vibrant geometric murals adorning their homesteads.

In his later years, Preller's focus expanded from the local and African to the universal. Influenced by a growing interest in space exploration and discovery, his work evolved, becoming progressively more abstract and celestial in nature.
